The tools that keep the force's boats working

Metropolitan Police / Boat workshop

In December 2023 we surveyed the workshop that maintains the force's boats. 134 tools were measured in normal use to BS EN ISO 5349 (grinders, sanders, impact wrenches, saws) in the hands of the people who actually use them, with faulty tools flagged on the spot. Every tool went back to work carrying an exposure-points tag, and the report ranked the lot by vibration magnitude, with clear priorities for servicing, substitution or retirement.

244 tools across the vehicle workshop

Metropolitan Police / Vehicle workshop

A month later the force's vehicle workshop followed: 244 tools measured in real tasks in January 2024, from air ratchets and die grinders to reciprocating saws cutting plate. Testing fitted around the workshop's day: operators briefed first, tools tested as found, results substantiated with repeat runs where needed. The report gives every tool a time to the action and limit values, so the kit that needs managing hardest is obvious at a glance.

Confidential operator / Producing platform

An offshore operator needed vibration and noise exposure data for a producing platform. One engineer mobilised with calibrated kit and the paperwork to match, worked around permits and shift patterns, and measured 36 assets in use. The survey completed inside a single trip, with exposure reported as A(8) and LEX,8h against the 2005 Regulations, and no second mobilisation required.

Strimmers to ride-ons, measured where they work

Estate & stadium grounds teams / Historic gardens · sports pitches

Grounds teams carry some of the highest hand-arm exposures we see: brushcutters on the banks, hedge trimmers held at full reach, pole saws overhead, then a ride-on or aerator for the rest of the shift. Recent surveys have covered historic estate gardens and stadium pitches alike, with each tool measured in the operator's hands during normal work to BS EN ISO 5349, wired triaxial sensors logging as they cut, and daily A(8) worked up from realistic trigger times. The report ranks the kit, shows where battery swaps and servicing pay off, and leaves every operator with a defensible daily figure.
